There’s no more discord between coparents Denise Richards and Charlie Sheen — but that doesn’t mean she’s forgotten about his past mistakes.
The Bold and the Beautiful actress got candid about some of her frustrations during a visit to Jana Kramer‘s Whine Down podcast, where she recalled having a few «hard» conversations with their daughters, Lola, 19, and Sami, 21, about Sheen’s public scandals.
«They weren’t ones to Google us because, you know, we’re mom and dad,» Richards began. But, she noted that even if the girls didn’t go looking, there was always the possibility of them learning things secondhand at school or on the internet. «This is where I was kind of upset with Charlie that he didn’t warn me when he came out publicly that he had has HIV.»
Referencing Sheen’s 2015 appearance on Today, where he opened up about his HIV-positive diagnosis, Richards said, «I knew that he was gonna [talk about it] eventually — he had to because the tabloids found out — but I wish he gave me a heads-up. Like, ‘Hey, I’m doing it today.’ You know? Because it was everywhere.»

Richards said she ended up picking their daughters up from school early that day because she didn’t want «kids at school, if they heard anything on their phones» to deliver the news first.
«I had to have a conversation about that. And it was kind of hard to explain to them what it was,» she said of their then pre-teen kids. «There’s been a few things that I’ve had to have conversations [about] with [them], but for the most part, I really try to shelter them from a lot of stuff.»
The podcast also saw Richards delve into her current relationship with Sheen, explaining that while they do get along, they don’t exactly have a friendship.
«Truthfully, it wasn’t co parenting. I parent my way. He parents his way, and there was no coparenting, unfortunately. I wish there was,» she said. «I’m friendly with Charlie, but I wish we were friends and that we could talk all the time and be able to be there, really, for each other with our girls. But that’s just not the relationship we have.»
She added, «Maybe one day. But right now, there’s no discord between he and I, which is great.»
In addition to Sami and Lola, Richards is mom to 13-year-old Eloise, who was adopted by her husband Aaron Phypers, whom she wed in 2018. Meanwhile, Sheen has one daughter, Paula, from a prior marriage and twin sons, Bob and Max, from his subsequent marriage to Brooke Mueller. Richards shared that she «always an advocate» of trying to «blend the family» and keep things cordial, as she «didn’t want the girls to feel like they had to choose sides.»
She continued, «I never talked bad about him in front of the kids, And that’s hard to do, to hold your tongue and not say certain things at times. And I don’t know if I did a disservice to them with that as well because now that they’re older, they’re discovering things that they didn’t know.»

Indeed, both girls have a complex relationship with Sheen, which was recently explored in Denise Richards & Her Wild Things, the reality series that sees them star alongside their mom. Sheen made his Bravo debut on Monday’s episode, joining his ex and youngest daughter for lunch — but eldest daughter Sami opted out.

«I would literally do anything else than go to lunch with my father,» the 21-year-old deadpanned to the camera in a confessional. «Me and my dad haven’t really spoken much in five months now. It goes in very big chunks with him. For the first 13 years of my life, it was pretty bad and then we were okay for a couple years. And now it’s just…»
In her own interview, Lola shared that her relationship with Sheen has «improved» in recent years: «I’m so close with him right now, and that’s such a blessing,» she said.
Observing her parents together during the dinner scene, Lola couldn’t help but comment, «I could never picture you guys being married.»
Later, when the subject of fame came up, she told them, «I’m scared of being famous. I’m scared of what people have to say,» to which Sheen offered some advice: «Don’t read anything,» he said. «Don’t read anything about it because if you don’t read it, it doesn’t exist.»
